World Book Day 2016 Alice in Wonderland at the White Rabbit's house

Good Morning to you all,

A very happy World Book Day to you! Both Mimi and I are bookworms and we have books all over the house. So we can read whenever we feel like it, I would love to have a whole room dedicated to our book collection, our own little library. So this year after browsing on line I got inspired, to replicate Alice in Wonderland at the White Rabbit's house. This book and the Disney film are both firm favorites in our home. I didn't realize what a mammoth task I was undertaking. My husband, Mimi and I worked very hard to create the rabbits house.

So we started with an old cardboard nappy box, we cut the top flaps of the box to create a roof.

We then painted the box white using a sponge to get a smooth clean finish. This box required two coats.

Once the paint had dried we decoupaged the whole box in a pretty flower design. This basically is a technique where you apply pva glue all over, place the paper on top and finish with another layer of pva glue on to top.

The above two stages we waited around an hour before we added more to it. The decoupage was laborious and very time consuming. I wouldn't recommend it. Better off either leaving the house white or using wrapping/roll paper instead. Once it was all dried we worked on the roof, with sharp blade we cut out red foam in strips.

We then added  the strips of red foam and layered them one on top of the other. We then trimmed the edges to give a nice clean finish.

For the arms we cut holes and reinforced with extra cardboard, to make it sturdy and more comfortable for Mimi to wear. For the head we cut foam, again to make the whole piece study and to ensure Mimi would be comfortable wearing it.

The front of the house, we used foam again for the windows, doors, shutters, plant pots, house name and bushes.  You can basically get carried away and add as little or as much detailing as you want.

The end result is the one we desired, it was hard work I won't lie. However when I see my daughter in a costume that we all worked hard to make is a memory I will treasure forever. We would love to see your World Book Day costumes, please tag us using the tag - #babblingonwbd on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.  Have a great World Book Day, and I am already looking for ideas for next year x
